Made a little mini drawing the other day and I'm liking the finality of producing something little. I've got a whole bunch of these little sheets of quite nice paper so I'm planning on making a bunch of drawings, perhaps in homage to the Post-It art show that Giant Robot has done a few times. It's a good format to try out something new, and let's face it, littler is always better.

I've also been working on the painting I posted an in-progress shot of last time, and I'm thinking about doing something weird with it, like tentacle creatures. Because, why not? I'll post that once I've made a dent.

Relapse

I'm back on the wagon. After a few months of work and then no work taking up my time and energy, I've started drawing and painting again and it feels incredible. I was inspired by a painting I saw at the National Gallery last month -- the curve of the neck, the gray wig and sloping shoulders. And this is where it went.

T-Shirts for Sale on CafePress

The first set of t-shirts based on images from the Girls show last winter has gone up. If you liked Abi (San Francisco), check out the new image and the shirt options. I used Illustrator to convert and tweak the image and I really like how it came out. This particular image seemed to get the most feedback, but if there's one you liked that you would want to see similarly on a shirt, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Check out my shop at http://www.cafepress.com/kendralyris Thanks for your support!

Twitter

I've set up a twitter account with the same name as the blog @kendrainart so that I can have more regular posting about art related things. Hopefully it will also help the regularity with which I post to the blog! So, if you're on twitter, follow me!

Antlers and horns

Tomorrow, it will have been two weeks in a new city and I've been to the Natural History museum three times, spending most of my time with the fossils and the mammals. Both have gotten me really interested in antlers and horns. I've done a few sketches that aren't worth pictures, but here's a study I did. I'm hoping it's more playful than satanic. There are likely more to come, so together maybe they'll work better.

I used a photograph of a friend as my starting point. There are a couple of problems with the proportions, which happens, especially after it's been a while, but it's interesting to use photographs. I was told so vehemently that I need to be drawing from life and that drawing from photographs suggested something bad about my abilities as an artist, so it's taken a long time to see the good in using photographs. I'm not sure I'm entirely there, but so many of my favorite artists either quite clearly or almost certainly use photographs before they begin. Jeremy Geddes is capable of such powerfully accurate cityscapes that I have to believe the either takes photographs to assist, or he is literally sitting in the street with his paintbrush. Shawn Barber takes detailed photographs, which help him accurately represent tattoos in oil. The brilliant street artist, Mac also uses photographs for reference in his portraits. There is technique, I think, to be learned anywhere. Using photographs cannot take the place of life drawing, but it can be very useful.

New City, New Muses

Moved from one coast to another last week. From Portland to DC. It's been a long move and has drained a lot of my time for art, but the incredible museums that DC has to offer create a pretty wonderful atmosphere.

As I settle in more, I plan on posting my current work, sketches, etc. And also putting some other sites to use to try to make some of this stuff available for purchase. Keep checking in!

Update!

She has hair and a hat now! Very exciting. I did this today at Stumptown on Division and a very nice man came over to ogle my Wacom and ended up handing me a stick of ram to double what my computer was running at the time. I didn't catch his name, which is quite rude of me, but I dig on the random acts of kindness and plan to participate soon.

Pattern attempt

This is another part of that first page I posted earlier this week. I'm liking where it's headed! Now I just need to make the sketches for all the other pages in the book....
